Our Story
The California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF) has been advancing science-based ocean and watershed protection since 1995. Originally established to support the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, CMSF has evolved into one of California’s most respected marine conservation nonprofits—serving as a trusted partner to state and federal agencies, Tribal governments, universities, research institutions, and local communities.

We deliver practical, forward-looking solutions that strengthen the resilience of California’s coast and ocean. From reducing ship strikes and underwater noise through voluntary vessel speed reduction programs, to mobilizing hundreds of community scientists for water quality monitoring, our projects connect science with action and people with place.

CMSF is actively working to design and implement nature-based shoreline restoration projects, develop tools to reduce plastic and nutrient pollution, and build regional climate partnerships. As the lead convener of more than 250 scientists, we are also developing California’s first environmental monitoring guidance for offshore wind development, helping shape future protections for marine wildlife and habitats.

Through our strategic partnerships and fiscal sponsorship platform, CMSF enables bold conservation efforts statewide—uniting stakeholders, unlocking funding, and scaling impact. As we celebrate 30 years of mission-driven leadership, we remain focused on safeguarding ocean and watersheds for future generations.
Our Committment to Community
All are welcome here. CMSF is committed to dismantling the longstanding boundaries that exist in the field of environmental conservation. When bringing on new staff and interns, we will adhere to fair recruiting policies within our work and with our partners in the local and conservation communities. We acknowledge that environmental conservation is woven with rich diversity, including Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and we will do our best to amplify all the voices that contribute to conservation. Lastly, we commit to continued listening and learning, to adapt to the needs of our community, and to be as inclusive as we can.
